State Representatives Maryam Khan and Matthew Ritter help ActUp Theater drive their mission forward!

Hartford, CT (May 2026) — ActUp Theater is proud to announce that Maryam Khan, Connecticut State Representative, and Matthew Ritter, Speaker of the Connecticut House of Representatives, successfully secured $150,000 in state funding to support ActUp Theater’s youth arts programming and community initiatives. The announcement was made during ActUp Theater’s Spring 2026 production of Matilda The Hip-Hop Musical Remix, where Representative Khan joined the stage to share the news in person!

Both leaders have been strong advocates for education, youth opportunity, and community investment across Connecticut. Representative Khan has consistently supported initiatives that expand access and equity for students and families in Hartford. Speaker Ritter has also championed efforts that strengthen community organizations and increase access to resources that support local growth and opportunity.

This funding arrives at a critical time for ActUp Theater. Over the past year, the organization experienced more than a 60% reduction in funding, creating major challenges for programming, staffing, and youth arts access. While this support does not fully restore what was lost, it provides meaningful momentum to help sustain and strengthen the organization’s work moving forward.

ActUp Theater Kicks Off 11th Season with Broadway Masterclass For Upcoming Roald Dahl’s Matilda Jr

Hartford, CT – ActUp Theater is proud to announce the kickoff of its 11th season on February 21, 2026, with a Broadway Masterclass led by Brittany Nicholas, Broadway’s dance captain for Stranger Things, Mean Girls, Mamma Mia, AND MATLIDA Jr., amongst a professional career spanning more than 18 years, National Tours, Broadway, and TV. This exciting opportunity gives Hartford youth unprecedented access to professional theater training.

Open auditions on February 23–25 for ActUp Theater’s upcoming production of Matilda, based on Roald Dahl’s beloved story, with a Hip-Hop remix that celebrates literacy, courage, student voice, and standing up to injustice—making it a powerful and engaging experience for youth, teens, and adults. Performers of all ages will gain professional guidance, real-world experience, and the opportunity to showcase their talents on the ActUp stage.

Kicking off the new year, ActUp’s one-day Broadway Masterclass features Brittany Nicholas, a New York-based multi-hyphenate artist who trained at the prestigious Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre and Destination Broadway Summer Camps. She made her Broadway debut in 2011 with Elton John’s Billy Elliot and has served as Dance Captain and Swing on both Broadway and National Tours. Brittany recently made her creative debut as Assistant Choreographer and Movement Director of Netflix’s Stranger Things: The First Shadow on Broadway.

On Monday, November 10, 2025, Broadway star Jared Dixon will lead an exclusive 2025 Broadway Masterclass, hosted by ActUp Theater. This rare experience invites adults, teens, and youth ages 8 and up to receive authentic Broadway-level training in acting, singing, and dance … right here in Hartford.

This one-day intensive will help participants build confidence, improve stage presence, and learn to captivate any audience. Through hands-on performance exercises, industry insights, and a live Q&A, attendees will gain powerful tools to elevate their artistry and storytelling.

Hartford, Conn. (July 2025) — ActUp Theater’s Arts Academy (ATAA) is headed to New York City! In a bold move to extend learning beyond the classroom and stage, ActUp Theater is taking over 35 young artists to see the world-renowned Broadway production of Hamilton, capping off a summer of immersive performing arts training rooted in the groundbreaking musical.

ActUp Theater’s Arts Academy (ATAA) is a dynamic summer program that offers intensive training during the Summer Academy. Designed for youth and teens, ages 8-18, ATAA fosters artistic exploration, life skillbuilding, and self-discovery—all while encouraging joy, collaboration, and cultural awareness.

A Summer of Skillbuilding and Soul 

This year’s ATAA curriculum was intentionally inspired  around the cultural phenomenon of Hamilton, using the musical’s bold storytelling and themes of identity, legacy, and resilience to shape a dynamic learning experience. Through scene work, movement, lyrical exploration, and creative discussion, students were invited to find their voices and deepen their craft—all while drawing inspiration from Lin-Manuel Miranda’s revolutionary vision.

After enjoying Hamilton on Broadway, students will enjoy a group dining experience at the legendary Amy Ruth’s Restaurant in Harlem—an iconic soul food establishment rooted in Southern tradition and family love. More than just a meal, the visit to Amy Ruth’s is a cultural touchstone: a sensory connection to legacy, resilience, and the richness of Black heritage.

“Every part of this trip is intentional,” added Johnson. “From the messages in Hamilton to the flavors at Amy Ruth’s, we want our students to experience Black excellence, artistry, and history in ways that stay with them long after summer ends.”

Over 2,000 attendees, a sparkling Ladies Night, and a successful Community Night highlight hosted by Senators McCrory — Celebrate the magic of ActUp Theater’s DREAMGIRLS!

Hartford, Conn., Dec. 17, 2024 — ActUp Theater’s production of DREAMGIRLS has come to a close after an incredibly successful run, drawing over 2,000 attendees from across the state of Connecticut. The performances, which ran from December 12-15, brought together diverse audiences, showcasing not only the talent of our cast but the vibrant spirit of our community. From dazzling costumes to unforgettable performances, this year's production was truly a celebration of artistry, perseverance, and the power of dreams.

This December, ActUp Theater will present the classic Musical Dream Girls. Auditions for singers, dancers and actors will be held Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, September 23 - 25, from 5 - 7 pm at Greater Hartford Academy Of The Arts, 15 Vernon St. Hartford. Children and adults ages 13 and up are welcome; maale and female; no experience necessary. This May 16-19, Hartford’s ActUp Theater will present one of America’s most beloved musicals, Grease, in the auditorium of Martin Luther King School, 25 Ridgefield Street, Hartford. Set in the 1950s, the musical tells the tale of the romance between Sandy and Danny and includes songs such as “You’re the One That I Want,” “Greased Lightning,”  “ Hopelessly Devoted to You,” and “Look at Me, I’m Sandra Dee.” Showtimes are 6:30 pm on Thursday, May 16’ 6:30 pm on Friday, May 17; 2:00 pm and 6:30 pm on Saturday, May 18. and 2 pm on Sunday, May 19. 'It's the Black alternative:' CT theater troupe putting on modern version of 'Grease'

HARTFORD — "Grease" is the word, is the word, is the word. That famous line from the 1978 movie musical that starred John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John will be ringing out at the Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School auditorium in Hartford this week as the ActUp Theater Group puts on its semi-annual performance.

The Hartford-based group, now in its ninth year, was born following the death of Trayvon Martin, a 17-year-old from Miami who was fatally shot in Sanford, Florida, and whose killing brought national scrutiny to Florida's stand-your-ground law.

"It's my mom's vision," Priestly Johnson said as cast members poured into the auditorium for rehearsal. "She wanted to give kids a better outlet."

Johnson, the chief operating officer, said that the troupe consists of about 45 regulars who range in age from 8 to 65 and that many former performers come back after college to volunteer on the production side. The company draws many of its performers from Hartford and surrounding towns, but some come from as far away as New Haven and Derby.

Other productions that the company has performed include "Our Sis, Cinderella," which features a modern-day Cinderella who has a talent for dancing and catches the eye of the prince, who is said to be the best dancer in the kingdom. The ball is transformed into a dance contest featuring hip-hop, jazz, reggae, modern and salsa dances and resulting in a multicultural urban fairy tale.

The company has also put on "Ebony Annie," a modern version of the 1924 comic strip and 1976 musical "Little Orphan Annie." In the modern version, Annie is a Black millennial who is having a hard time finding out where she belongs and uses social media to try to find her birth parents.

Nia Williams, 12, who played the lead role in "Ebony Annie," plays cheerleader Patty Simcox in this version of "Grease." Williams said her character is very bubbly and trying to fit in without changing who she is.

Williams who has been performing with the theater since she was 7, said she doesn't get nervous performing before a crowd anymore and uses the audience to draw energy.

As for the theater group, Williams said she has stayed with it "because it's so inclusive."

The production of "Grease" will be performed Thursday, Friday, twice on Saturday and will close on Sunday. Tickets are available at actuptheater.org or at the door. The school is at 25 Ridgefield St. in Hartford.

HARTFORD, CT - May 4, 2023 - ActUp Theater (“ActUp”), Hartford’s premier performing arts organization, presents a lively stage adaptation of Disney’s The Lion King in its latest showcase. The show hits the stage Thursday, May 18 through Sunday, May 21, 2023, at Martin Luther King, Jr. Auditorium (25 Ridgefield Street Hartford, CT 06112). 

The Lion King is a family classic that has impacted all generations' lives for its important messages regarding friendship, love, and hope. Its vibrant songs of Hakuna Matata, Circle of Life, and Can You Feel The Love Tonight will be performed by a talented cast of all ages to bring this story to life and onto the ActUp Theater stage for a family-friendly night out.

Founded in 2015, ActUp provides performing arts education and opportunities to underserved, emerging artists in Hartford and its surrounding communities. Through its dedication to ongoing community engagement and impactful programming, the non-profit mobilizes the arts to transform lives, enact social change, and drive artistic innovation.
